He said the government was taking all steps to restore 'status quo ante at the earliest' even as it condemned in strongest terms the action of Bangladesh Rifles in killing BSF personnel on the Assam border.
"Government is working towards early restoration of status quo ante, which included safe return of Indian citizens uprooted from border villages," Singh said when members, including Leader of the Opposition Manmohan Singh, voiced concern over the issue.
Refusing to commit any time-frame for restoration of status quo ante as demanded by members, Singh said the action of the Bangladesh Rifles was not acceptable to the Indian government.
New Delhi had already conveyed its displeasure over the action of Bangladesh Rifles to the "friendly" government in Dhaka. "Very soon the issue would be resolved," he said.
