DMK members force Parliament adjournment

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham on Monday forced adjournment of the Lok Sabha for the day when its members stormed into the well of the House when it reconvened at 1400 hours to protest against alleged police excesses on its party workers at Sunday's rally in Madras.

Not to be left behind, All India Anna DMK (AIADMK) members also rushed to the well of the House to counter the DMK members.

When Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed's efforts to restore order in the House went in vain, he adjourned the House for the day.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Krishna Kant had earlier adjourned the House till Tuesday over the same issue.

Earlier, when the Lok Sabha convened at 1100 hours (IST), DMK member Vetriselvan caused a sensation when he took off his shirt to exhibit the wounds on his body reportedly suffered during the attack by the Tamil Nadu police.

Agitated All India Anna DMK (AIADMK) members countered by terming the allegations as cooked up charges.

The DMK members shouted slogans demanding dismissal of the Jayalalithaa government and imposition of Article 356 in Tamil Nadu.

Failing to pacify the DMK and the AIADMK members, Speaker G M C Balayogi adjourned the House till 1400 hrs.

Emerging from the House, the rivals continued shouting slogans against each other till they found some television channels willing to hear them out.

P H Pandiyan, leader of the AIADMK parliamentary party told reporters that DMK chief M Karunanidhi had instructed party cadres to run riot during the rally.

He alleged that the wounds on DMK workers were self-inflicted.
