No group has so far claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack on Parliament House. Talking to the media, various federal ministers said they were unaware of the terrorists' identity.
At the time of the attack, President K R Narayanan, who was inaugurating the fourth SAARC Writers' Conference at India International Centre, New Delhi, hurriedly gave away the awards to distinguished writers after one of his aides whispered in his ear, apparently informing him of the developments in Parliament House.
Soon after Narayanan left the venue, one of the organisers announced that the President had to leave following "an emergency in Parliament."
Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Jagmohan and former prime ministers I K Gujral and V P Singh, who were also present, left the venue with Narayanan.
