Delhi police confirm terrorists
planned to take hostages

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Senior Delhi police officers on Monday confirmed that the five fidayeens, who attacked Parliament on December 13, had planned to take hostages.

Talking to rediff.com, Deputy Commissioner (special branch) Ashok Chand said that the focus of investigation would now switch to the terrorists' motive.

"We have recovered a large quantity of eatables from their person, it is obvious that they were prepared for a long haul," he said.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir police in coordination with their Delhi counterparts have arrested Tariq, the man responsible to pursuing Mohammad Afzal to be part of the operation.

Afzal played the role of Jaish-e-Mohammad point man in Delhi and coordinated the operation.

Delhi Police Commissioner Ajay Raj Sharma told reporters recently that Tariq had taken Afzal to Gazi Baba, the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad coordinator.

Tariq had met Mohammad Afzal in February this year and he is one of those who had been in the know of the entire operation from day one.
