US asks Pak to work against extremist groups

The US on Wednesday conveyed to Pakistan that it had an obligation to work against extremist groups that operate out of its soil.

"We have made quite clear in our discussions with the Pakistani government that as we pursue terrorism next door (in Afghanistan), all countries have an obligation to work against terrorism within their own borders...we look to the Pakistani government to work against extremist groups that operate out of Pakistan," US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.

He said Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke to India's External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on Tuesday evening. US ambassadors in Islamabad and New Delhi are also keeping in close touch with the governments there.

"Our basic view (on the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament) has not changed," said Boucher. "The basic view is that the Indians need to conduct the investigation, need to consider what the appropriate action might be to help protect their people against terrorism, to help protect their democracy against terrorism. But we think it is incumbent upon all to make sure that we pursue the overall effort against terrorism."
