Annan urges India and Pak not to resort to war

Dharam Shourie in United Nations

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday urged India and Pakistan to resolve their differences through negotiations and not resort to war.

Addressing his year-end press conference, Annan said, "I have always encouraged parties to resolve the issues through dialogue and political means as there are no military solutions to differences that divide them."

Replying to a question on escalating tension between the two countries following the attack on Indian Parliament by Pakistan-based terrorist groups, he expressed the hope that whatever happened does not lead to war.

Annan did not reply directly the question whether he would get involved in the region, but noted the Indian government had said diplomatic option is on the table and is going to be considered.

He expressed the confidence that it would be possible for India and Pakistan to find a way out of this without resorting to war.
