India may send a CBI
team to Kandahar

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Government of India would shortly send an official communication to the new Afghan government headed by Hamid Karzai seeking the tapes of the conversation between the hijackers and the control tower during the time when hijacked plane IC 814 was parked at the Kandahar airport between December 25-31, 1999.

The government would also seek the permission from the new Afghan government to allow a Central Bureau of Investigating team to visit Kandahar.

Five Pakistan-based hijackers had taken the Indian Airlines Flight 814 to Kandahar. They subsequently secured the release of some top terrorists, including Maulana Masood Azhar, the chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed, in exchange of the safe release of the passengers.

Three men arrested for their alleged conspiracy in the hijacking case are facing trial in a Patiala court.
