At least two people have died and nearly 100 are battling for life after eating rotten fish in Orissa's Balasore district, official sources said on Tuesday.
Due to a shortage of ice, some seafood companies had unloaded large quantities of fish meant for export in the local markets, which the fishermen sold at very low prices, a district health official said.
"Since a large quantity of these fish turned rotten, people fell sick," the official told Indo-Asian News Service on condition of anonymity.
The dead, both women, were identified as Draupadi Jena, 65, and Ghuti Dei, 40.
Over the past four days, about 100 people have been admitted to government and private hospitals in Balasore after they contracted diarrhoea.
The district administration has taken steps to remove the rotten fish from the markets, an official said.
