Onkar Singh in New Delhi | August 19, 2003 17:18 IST

Chandrakant Khaire of the Shiv Sena, while speaking against the no-confidence motion moved by the Leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Monday, said Maharashtra is on the verge of a break-down.

"There have been six bomb attacks in the past couple of months. The law and order situation in the state is on the verge of breaking down," he charged.

Maharashtra is ruled by a Congress-Nationalist Congress Party coalition led by Sushilkumar Shinde.

Khaire, who chairs a parliamentary standing committee on Pradhan Mantri Sadak Rozgar Yojana, claimed that the Vajpayee government has achieved more in the past four years than the Congress did in 50 years of its rule.

"More then 14,000 km of roads would come up in 28 states [under the Pradhan Mantri Sadak Rozgar Yojana] as against just 556 km built by the Congress during its rule," he claimed.

He praised the Vajpayee government for doing a commendable job in the field of power generation as well.

"In 50 years of the Congress rule the total power generation was around 1,07,000 mega watts. In the next ten years (2002-2012) we are going to produce more then 1,60,000 mega watts of electricity. Isn't this a commendable achievement?" he asked.

He said the Union government has come forward to help ailing state electricity boards.

Another sector, he said, where the Vajpayee government has done commendable work is railways. "The Vajpayee government which has started work to link Srinagar with the rest of the country through a rail link. Work on Udhampur-Srinagar railway head work has begun in full earnestness," Khaire said.

Since he could not complete his speech in the stipulated time despite repeated reminders, Speaker Manohar Joshi asked the next speaker, Priyarajan Das Munshi, to begin his speech.
