Panja hints at re-joining Congress

June 03, 2003 21:54 IST

Suspended Trinamool Congress member of Parliament Ajit Panja on Tuesday shared a platform with West Bengal Congress chief Pranab Mukherjee, who invited him to rejoin the Congress.

Panja had left the Congress and joined the Mamta Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress in West Bengal in 1997.

In 2001 he was suspended in 2001 from the Trinamool after insisting that the party remain in the National Democratic Alliance after the Tehelka expose.

Now there is talk once again of his return to the Congress.

"Doors of the Congress are always open for him. Panja was a senior leader of Congress and also a former Union minister. He has some political issues to sort out and he will take a decision after considering them," Mukherjee told newspersons after the two leaders campaigned for Panja's daughter and Congress candidate Mahua Mondal for an assembly bypoll.

Panja too did not rule out the possibility of his re-joining Congress. "I will take a decision in due course of time keeping in mind what is best for the people of West Bengal," he said.
