Protests over Imam's murder in Baramullah

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar | June 16, 2003 19:16 IST

The killing of an Imam and his 13-year-old son on Monday triggered protests in Daroo Freshtwar town in northern Baramullah district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Police said villagers found the bodies of Abdul Quyoom Peer and his son Masood Ahmad in the morning.

As the news about the killing spread, hundreds of villagers staged a dharna with the bodies near Wagad village.

The villagers claimed security forces killed the Imam and his son on Sunday night while they were returning home.

The police, however, blamed the killing on unidentified gunmen.
