Heat wave toll mounts to 370 in Andhra Pradesh

Three hundred and seventy people have died in the last 12 days in Andhra Pradesh due to the heat wave sweeping across several parts of the state, government officials told rediff.com on Tuesday.

East Godavari district alone has accounted for 85 deaths. Prakasam with 52 deaths, West Godavari with 41, Karimnagar with 38, Nalgonda with 31, Krishna with 30 and Nellore with 21 deaths are the severely affected districts.

The toll in other districts included Guntur (14), Chittoor (12), Warangal (11), Khammam (9), Adilabad (6), Mahbubnagar and Rangareddy (5 each), Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam (4 each) and Cuddapah and Nizamabad (one each).

State Relief Commissioner D C Rosaiah said families of persons who have died will be eligible for financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each under the National Family Benefit Scheme.

The heat wave is expected to prevail for the next two days, Hyderabad meteorological department said.
