BJP fields Vasundhara from Pilawa as well

November 13, 2003 18:47 IST

Playing safe, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday decided to field its chief ministerial candidate for Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje, from a second constituency, Pilawa.

Raje is also contesting from Jhalarpatan and both these assembly seats are in her Lok Sabha constituency of Jhalawar.

Assembly election in the desert state is scheduled for December 1.

"Rajasthan state unit was of the view that she should contest from two constituencies and that is why it was decided to field her from another constituency," party spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters in New Delhi.

Naqvi said the party has completed the exercise of selection of candidates for four states leaving four seats for Akali Dal (Badal) in Delhi and three for Janata Dal (United) in Rajasthan.

He said 50 per cent of BJP's candidates are new faces, most of them youth leaders.

The party has fielded a total of 53 women, 86 scheduled caste and 89 scheduled tribe candidates, Naqvi said.
