September 23, 2003 18:11 IST

With the help of the in-charge insurgents of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura attacked a camp of the Tripura State Rifles at Shermuntila in North Tripura district and killed two jawans before looting the entire stock of arms and ammunitions.

The TSR jawans had been deployed to guard a microwave station. Police said the camp in-charge, Rohit Miah, sent 11 of them to the forest in the morning to collect firewood, but unarmed. This left only five jawans in the camp.

The militants attacked the camp at around 0900 IST using sophisticated weapons killing two jawans and injuring three. They decamped with nine SLRs, one LMG, one carbine, 20 grenades, two .303 rifles, 16 magazines and 1,285 cartridges. Rohit Miah left the camp along with the ultras, police said.

Superintendent of Police Sourav Tripathy has rushed to the spot with reinforcements.
