60 applications to witness Dhananjoy's hanging

Sixty prominent citizens have sought permission to be present when Dhananjoy Chatterjee is hanged. The applications had been submitted to the jail department. The jail superintendent and the district magistrate would deal with them.

Apart from the Jail Superintendent Ranjit Mondal, two deputy magistrates on behalf of the district magistrate, one assistant chief medical officer (health), a doctor and the hangman along with his two or three assistants would be present during the execution besides two or three jail wardens.

Two male members from the convict's family and 10 others would be permitted to be present at the time of the execution along with 12 armed guards.

"The process of hanging Dhananjoy is at the last stage and the state government has taken all necessary measures," West Bengal Jail Minister Biswanath Choudhury said.

Choudhury, who was accompanied by Law Minister Nisith Adhikar, said the health

department had been intimated of the convict's desire to donate his eyes and kidneys. "However, it has to be kept in mind that as per prescribed rules, the body will have to be kept hanging for 30 minutes," he said.
