Putting an end to the four-day political stalemate in Goa [Images], Governor S C Jamir on Tuesday convened the assembly session on Wednesday to give the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government a chance to prove its strength in the House.

The House will assemble at 1430 IST and take up the one-point agenda of the vote of confidence.

After his government was reduced to a minority, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar [Images], through a Cabinet resolution, had requested the governor to convene the House on February 3.

But the new alliance, led by the Congress, had demanded the immediate dismissal of the government.

The 40-member assembly has been reduced to 36, as four ruling BJP members of Legislative Assembly quit the party and put in their papers. The BJP now has 16 legislators, excluding the speaker.

In addition, two ministers � one belonging to the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and the other an independent - quit the cabinet while withdrawing support to the government.

They have joined hands with the Congress-led United Legislature Party, which now has 18 members.

The issue of tourism minister Mathany Saldhana is still hanging fire. While the minister has supported Parrikar, his United Goans Democratic Party has withdrawn support to the government.

In spite of being in minority, the chief minister has expressed confidence about winning the trust vote.
