About half-a-dozen masked assailants on Friday swooped on a police team, escorting a life convict to a court in Jind, and sped away with him in their vehicle.

Baljeet Singh had been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Panipat court for murder and was being escorted by three policemen to Jind for appearance in a robbery case.

While waiting at a bus stop at GT Road here this morning, some six men wearing masks came in a vehicle, forced him inside and sped away, police said.

On June 6, another prisoner from the local jail had escaped from police custody while he was being taken to Panchkula to be produced in a court.
