For the third consecutive day on Wednesday, Tripura remained virtually cut off from the rest of the country, as landslides and severe floods ravaged the state.

Landslides on the Assam-Agartala National Highway in Meghalaya and Assam have almost cut off the state from the rest of the country, official sources said.

Employees of the army's General Reserve Engineering Force were working hard to clear the debris of the landslides from Loarpoa and Hatigira in Barak Valley region of Assam and Sonarpur in Meghalaya's Jayantiya Hill, sources said. The work is likely to be completed on Wednesday.

The water levels in rivers Juri and Kakri are flowing above the danger level. Due to Tuesday night's moderate rainfall in Dharmanagar sub-division of North Tripura district, the flood situation remained unchanged even on Wednesday, they said.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Gopika Ranjan Das told PTI that about 6000 people from 1200 families have taken shelter in 19 relief camps opened by the administration. He said 22 boats were pressed into service to rescue people who are confined in their houses in view of waterlogging. Das said, four persons had died in two villages of the sub-division on Monday as their houses collapsed.
