Political developments in Goa [Images] in which the Congress-led government has been reduced to a minority appeared to have come as a shock to the party high command.

"Nothing has been decided as yet," All India Congress Committee general secretary Margaret Alva told PTI when asked whether any Central observers are being sent to Panaji for a 'rescue operation.'

In Panaji, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat is claiming that he enjoys majority while former chief minister Manohar Parrikar of the Bharatiya Janata Party is staking claim to form the state government and has asked Kamat to resign by Thursday afternoon.

Goa has a remained politically mercurial state with changing loyalties and the situation has created 15 chief ministers in last two decades.

In a late night development, the 49-day old Digambar Kamat-led Goa government plunged into minority as one of its allies along with an independent legislator withdrew its support and a woman Congress legislator resigned from the state Assembly.

The Congress-led government was brought down to 18 legislators while BJP-led opposition has 20 legislators on its side in the 40-member Goa Assembly.

The BJP-led formation has now support of two legislators of Maharashtra Gomantak Party, two of Save Goa Front, one of United Goans Democratic Party and an independent legislator Anil Salgaoncar.
