Hectic political activity has begun in the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party camp to save the Digamber Kamat-led Goa [Images] government, which plunged into minority late on Wednesday night.
A series of closed-door meetings are being held at the chief minister's official residence at Altinho in Panaji, where Congress and NCP legislators are working on their strategy, sources said.
An independent legislator, Vishwajit Rane, who is a health minister in Kamat Cabinet, has stood by the crumbling government.
All the three NCP legislators, too, have remained with Kamat.
"Vishwajit has been sitting for all the meetings and is very much contributing to work out the strategy to save the government," a Congress legislator said on the condition of anonymity.
It was expected that Vishwajit, son of Goa Speaker Pratapsingh Rane, may switch loyalty to the newly formed political formation led by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Congress-led government's strength is reduced to 19 following backout by alliance partner -- Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.
"I still enjoy the majority and I will prove it on the floor of the house," Kamat had told PTI.
Sources confirmed that various ways are being thought about to reconcile with the alliance partners.
The possibility of convincing Congress legislator Victoria Fernandes to withdraw her resignation is also being thought about, sources said.
The State Legislative Assembly, which is currently in session, will meet at 2.30 pm, where the newly formed BJP-led formation will try to defeat the government on the floor of the House.
"We had decided to meet Govenor S C Jamir in the morning and stake our claim, but he is yet to return from the Delhi. We are waiting for him," a BJP legislator told PTI.
Following political developments on Wednesday night, the Congress-led coalition is cut down to mere 19 while 20 legislators comprise of BJP and its allies.
