The Central Reserve Police Force has managed to enter most of the villages of violence ravaged Nandigram on Tuesday and were conducting raids, top police official of East Midnapore district said.

There has been no resistance from either the Communist Party of India-Marxist or the anti-land acquisition Bhoomi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee. CRPF personnel were patrolling different areas with the police, District Superintendent of Police S S Panda said.

The central forces were setting up five camps in the interior areas as 500 CRPF personnel conducted raids at Sonachura, Gokulnagar, Adhikaripara and other areas, all erstwhile strongholds BUPC now under the control of CPI-M, he said.

There were no reports of retaliatory attacks by CPI-M cadres on members of the BUPC, agitating against land acquisition for past 11 months, the SP said and denied reports of exchange of fire with CPI-M cadres on Monday night at Garchakraberia.

To a question, Panda said 1,500 people were still out of their homes but he was hopeful they would return and not face any attacks.
