Eriksson stands by Beckham as captain

October 14, 2004 10:41 IST

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson stood by David Beckham on Wednesday as his captain apologised for deliberately getting sent off in last weekend's World Cup match against Wales.

Speaking after a 1-0 win over Azerbaijan in their World Cup qualifier, Eriksson said he had no problems with Beckham continuing as England captain.

"Did I ever doubt that Beckham should carry on as England captain in the future?" he asked. "No way. I have never doubted that."

He added: "Of course I appreciate his apology. I haven't read it exactly, as I was with the team, but that's very good."

Asked if he hoped this would be the end of a matter that has overshadowed two England victories, Eriksson said: "Of course. Let's finish it here for ever."
