Judicial probe into acid attack on Gowda's wife dropped

Reversing the decision within days after a judicial probe was ordered, Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge said the Corps of Detectives would probe the incident and there was no need for any other inquiry.

On Thursday last, government had announced both a judicial inquiry and a COD probe 'into the criminal aspects' of last week's incident in which Gowda's wife, Chenamma and his daughter-in-law were injured when acid was splashed on them, allegedly by his nephew.

In a statement after holding discussions with JD(S) leader K H Srinivas, Kharge said the government had revised its decision on a judicial inquiry after taking into consideration various views expressed on the issue.

Kharge said the COD would also look into the security lapse involving the local police and action would be initiated based on their report.

In a swift action following the incident, government had announced the judicial probe. However, within hours Gowda dashed off a letter to Chief Minister S M Krishna, saying there was no need for an inquiry against anyone and he did not like anyone being punished.

Srinivas had demanded a CBI inquiry.

Chenamma had suffered 30 per cent burns in the attack which took place at a temple on Shivarathri at Gowda's native village Haradanahalli in Hassan district.
